Med Imaging offering faster osteoporosis diagnosis

Med Imaging has provided and installed a community-based DEXA bone densitometry service in a national gym outlet. The move allows faster access for patients at risk of developing osteoporosis, who will be assessed, scanned and diagnosed in less than 48 hours.

Mednostic Solutions Ltd. is challenging the limited diagnostic services currently available for people with osteoporosis, whilst supporting the NHS by offering preventative fracture treatment.

Established by former-pharmaceutical sales and marketing manager, Ben Paglia and partner Dr Jack Kinsey, the company will support North West CCG’s as well as offering private osteoporosis diagnostics.

Dr Kinsey explains: “With one in three women expected to suffer a fracture caused by osteoporosis – many of which could be prevented with adequate screening – our focus is to aid primary and secondary prevention in an increasingly ageing population, whilst raising awareness of the disease.”

According to the National Osteoporosis Guideline Group (NOGG) fractures related to osteoporosis cost the NHS over £1.73 billion each year, this is expected to rise to over £2.1 billion per year in 2020.

Dr. Kinsey continues: “The disease is massively under diagnosed and provision for scanning is currently hugely under resourced. Our services are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), whilst our registered nurses are fully trained by the National Osteoporosis Society in bone densitometry as well as treatment and management of the condition.”

In addition to osteoporosis screening, the team will also work with a number of local associates including fitness trainers, health professionals and nutritional experts to offer full body composition and fitness analysis for professional athletes. The results will be incorporated into bespoke health, fitness or rehabilitation programs to target weight-loss and manage safe muscle-gaining activities, preventing injury through over-training.

Med Imaging’s Dexa Technical Specialist, Peter Kent-Baldwin commented:Mednostic Solutions is highlighting the growing need to raise awareness of osteoporosis. For the NHS there is a huge financial burden associated with the condition as well as life changing implications of fractures both in men and women.”

Bone Densitometry is a test for Osteoporosis, a condition where the bones become more fragile and are at increased risk of fracture. Earlier detection of the risk of Osteoporosis allows for earlier treatment, reducing the chances of the condition developing.
